Prevention of Bullying in
Schools
House of Representatives Introduces Two Bills to Address
Issue
Representative Linda
Sanchez (D-CA) has introduced two bills that would amend the Safe and
Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. On March 18, 2009,
the Bullying and Gang Reduction for Improved Education
Act, HR 1589 was introduced, followed by the Safe Schools Improvement Act, HR 2262 on May 5,
2009.
HR 1589 adds bullying and gang prevention to the programs that are currently
supported under the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities
program. HR 2262 would go one step further and
require states to collect and include data on harassment and bullying in
their statewide assessment reporting, according to Rep. Sanchez’s
website. Both bills have been referred to the Education and Labor
Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary
Education.
